Big Changes Coming to Facebook Promotions

Big changes are coming to Facebook’s promotions, and everyone at AmsiveDigital is very excited! We run several promotions and giveaways a month for our various clients and Facebook’s recent changes are sure to alter the way AmsiveDigital and other online marketer approach Facebook promotions and contests.

Last year, Facebook began enforcing a rule that states they must pre-approve all on-site promos and restricted access to only those spending more than $10,000 on advertising.

Why? Facebook said this was necessary to protect themselves in case of a law suit. Guess the fear of a law suit has waned because they are no longer afraid because the restriction is about to be lifted.

According to Inside Facebook, “the social media site is removing the pre-approval and financial commitment, thereby opening up the contest option to anyone running a fan page.”

This is news is life-changing for any marketers who regularly run campaigns and contests on Facebook.

However, contest regulations haven’t completely gone away. Mostly they’re legal issues regarding age, alcohol, tobacco, gambling, etc. and that you must make it clear that Facebook isn’t involved. They also don’t allow contests that require people to post status updates, contests where you’re entered just by becoming a fan and oddly, you can’t notify the winner through Facebook. This causes some trouble for marketers, but there are obvious ways around it.
