Digital Week in Review: Youtube, LinkedIn, Google, and Instagram

Don’t stress out! We’re back and we’re here to provide you with some of this week’s most important updates in digital media.

Youtube makes changes to its algorithm

Up until now, videos on Youtube would rank based upon the amount of views they received. Now, Youtube will rank videos based upon the amount of time the video is viewed. With these changes in place, users are encouraged to upload more engaging videos than ever before. For a more detailed look into the update, check out the recent blog post written by Ted Hamilton, the head of creator marketing communications at Youtube.

LinkedIn launches the next generation profile

Last week we learned that companies were able to add a cover image to their company profiles. Now, LinkedIn users will have the opportunity to update their personal profiles. After logging onto your LinkedIn profile, you will have the opportunity to request an invitation to the new LinkedIn profile, which appears to be more aesthetically appealing and user-friendly. With the new profile, you will be able to establish a more memorable impression, visually grasp the connections you have within your network, and track the activity in your network.  Still not convinced? Check out the blog post by Aaron Bronzan, LinkedIn’s Project Manager.

Google launches its disavow tool

It’s exactly what it sounds like. With this new disavow tool, you will now be able to report the spammy links to your site that Google has marked as problematic.  To learn more about how to use the disavow tool for you blog, check out Matt Cutt’s video on the matter.

Instagram translates @mentions to Twitter usernames

Instagram has just gotten a little bit easier. As long as you have your Twitter account synced with your Instagram account, Instagram will automatically match an @mention on their platform to a username on Twitter. So if you happen to tag your friend in a photo on Instagram using their @mention, and that same friend has their Instagram synced with their Twitter, they will automatically get tagged in that photo on Twitter with their Twitter username. That concludes this week’s digital media briefing. Stay tuned for next week’s digital week in review!
