Digital Week in Review: SnapChat’s New Chat Feature, Facebook Audience Network, and Customers Influenced By Contests on Social Media

In this week’s Digital Week in Review: SnapChat adds new texting and video conversation feature, Facebook rolls out the Facebook Audience Network, and an infographic on how customers are influenced by contests on  social media.

Snapchat Now Has Chat Feature

Snap chat will now allow users to chat in real-time with their friends. Up until now, exchanges could only consist of pictures and short videos that only lasted a few seconds. Keeping in line with Snapchat’s traditions, the chat messaging on this new feature will disappear once users leave the chat screen. Users will also be able to video chat through Snapchat just like Facetime or Skype. To start a conversation with a friend, you will just swipe right on that person’s name.

“Until today, we felt that Snapchat was missing an important part of conversation: presence….There’s nothing like knowing you have the full attention of your friend while you’re chatting.”” – Snapchat

This new version of Snapchat is now available to all iOS and Android users.

Facebook Audience Network

Last week at the F8 global developer conference, Facebook introduced its new mobile ad network called Facebook Audience Network. It is still currently in beta and is intended to be rolled out to more advertisers in the next few months.

Included in this network is the same ad targeting measurement tools that traditional Facebook advertising has, and includes custom audiences, core audiences, and lookalike audience. Facebook Audience Network will also be available in all interfaces including Facebook ads application programming interface.

“The idea behind the Audience Network is now advertisers can use all of the targeting they were used to on Facebook, and extend the reach of those campaigns to other applications, as well. For example, we’ve talked with Hipmunk, where Hipmunk wanted to find people who were searching on its website and show them an ad for the Hipmunk app. So they can do that using the Audience Network. Previously, we could do that only inside Facebook. For advertisers, it’s just a great way for them to reach the audience they really care about and show them ads that the people want to see.”- Facebook Production Manager Sriram Krishnan

Influencing Customers With Social Media

A new infographic from TAMBA is showing how influential sweepstakes on social media can be to consumers. A reported 9 out of 10 people have used social media to try to win something with Facebook being the most popular for contest entries and Twitter in second place. Of those people who enter competitions, it is estimated that approximately 85% percent of them will share content from a brand on social media even after the contest ends.
