Digital Week in Review: Sheryl Sandberg Now a Billionaire, New Pricing for Netflix, and Macintosh’s 30th Aniversary

In this week’s Digital Week in Review: Sheryl Sandberg is now a billionaire according to Bloomberg Billionaires Index, new pricing tiers for Netflix members-to-be, and the 30th anniversary of the Macintosh computer.

Sheryl Sandberg Became a Billionaire on Tuesday

Sheryl Sandberg, author of the bestselling book Lean In and COO of Facebook, became a billionaire on Tuesday with her net worth hitting $1.03 billion dollars.

Sandburg has sold off over 300 million shares of Facebook stock since the company went public back in May 2012. However, she still currently owns 12.3 million shares in the company.

Facebook closed at $58.51 a share at the end of Tuesday, nearly double the price of its stock last year. These strong numbers have been a result of increased investor confidence in Facebook’s ability to monetize on mobile devices and new potential revenue from Instagram ads and video ads.

Pricing Tiers for New Netflix Members

Netflix will soon be reconstructing its pricing tiers by introducing three pricing options for new members.

In the Q4 letter to shareholders released Wednesday, CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Well wrote:

“Last April we introduced a 4-concurrent stream $11.99 option to begin our evaluation of plan tiering. Since late last year, we have also been testing 1-stream and 3-stream variants, as well as SD/HD variations, at various price points. Eventually, we hope to be able to offer new members a selection of three simple options to fit everyone’s taste.”

Existing members will be extended a grandfathering of their current pricing and plans.

The new pricing tiers will not be content specific so customers who pay more will not receive a larger amount of content. Netflix will also be offering 4K streaming, this will be introduced with the launch of the second season of the Netflix original drama House of Cards. This will come at no extra cost.

Netflix’ s 2013 Q4 earnings generated $1.175 billion in revenue and a net income of $48 million. Worldwide, Netflix currently has 44 million subscribers, up from 33 million just a year ago.
