Digital Week in Review: Instagram Ads, Twitter I.P.O. Price, and The New iPad Air

In this week’s Digital Week in Review: Instagram shares a sample of how the new advertisements will appear, Twitter releases new I.P.O. prices, and the new iPad Air is lighter and thinner than ever.

Instagram Reveals What Ads Are Going to Look Like

Instagram has already released its plan to introduce ads into user’s news feeds. These new ads will be labeled as “sponsored posts” and look very much like a regular Instagram upload.

Instagram said they already have plans to launch advertising posts with big names like Adidas, Burberry, Lexus, Macy’s, Michael Kors, PayPal, Ben & Jerry’s and more.

“We want to show ads from businesses that are interesting to you, and to do that, we will use information about what you do on Instagram and Facebook (our parent company). For instance, this might include the people you follow and the photos and videos you like on Instagram, and your interests and other basic info on Facebook.

Everyone on Instagram will see ads from time to time whether or not they’re Facebook users, and basic information from Facebook helps create a more relevant experience. Providing feedback if you see an ad you don’t find interesting will also help us show you more engaging ads over time.

Our aim is to make any advertisements you see feel as natural to Instagram as the photos and videos many of you already enjoy from your favorite brands.”- Instagram

Twitter Sets I.P.O. Price

Twitter has disclosed that it plans to sell 70 million shares at $17 to $20 each. This would value Twitter at approximately $10 billion dollars, excluding options. Including options, the company would be valued at over $12 billion.

“Such a valuation would make Twitter more than three times as big as one of the first big Internet giants, AOL, but only a fraction of Facebook, the last big Internet initial public offering, which now has a market value of more than $127 billion.”- New York Times

Analysts have said that the valuation is so high because the company is growing so fast. Twitter’s 2013 Q3 revenue doubled to 168.6 million. It is projected that Twitter could end up earning over $1 billion in revenue next year.
