In this week’s Digital Week in Review: Google Glass goes on sale for one day only, Joe Biden gets an Instagram account, and an infographic about smartphones is released.

Google Glass Went on Sale For One Day This Week

Earlier this week on Tuesday (April 15^th), Google made Google Glass available for the public to buy for just one day only. This was the first time Google had opened up their product to the general public for purchase. Before this, the only way to purchase the product was to receive an invite through Google.

Glass was made available in several different colors such as Charcoal, Shale, Sky and Tangerine. The “Cotton” color (white), was sold out by 3:00pm Eastern Time.

The attitudes toward Glass have gone from excited to annoyed, as it has been likened to a “Bluetooth” ear piece. Articles containing etiquette guidelines to follow and how not to be a “Glass-hole” when wearing Google Glass have spread across the internet.

TechCrunch has released a video that “discusses some of the quick assumptions about Glass” and “gives you a look through the eyes of the device in action”.

Joe Biden Joins Instagram

Joe Biden has created his own personal Instagram account under the name “VP”. The account has already amassed 109,000 followers. Biden only follows two accounts, The White House’s official account, and Michelle Obama. One of his first posts was a “selfie” of him and President Barack Obama. Hashtags used so far have included : #joiningforces #ActOnJobs and  #MadeInAmerica

Smartphone Stats Regarding Social Media, Internet, SMS, and Apps

There are currently more than 1.4 billion smartphones in existence in the world today, which means 1 in 5 people have a smartphone.  Obviously this number becomes more concentrated in certain countries, but none the less, especially in developed countries, most people prefer smartphones. 76 million of these smartphone users use the phones to log onto social media apps such as Twitter every day. But that’s not all. Every 24 hours there are 24 billion SMS texts sent, almost 190 million apps downloaded, 12 billion calls made, and $1.1 billion spent in mobile payments.
