Digital Week in Review: Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Available for Pre-Order, Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Videos Views Per Day, and The Evolution of Twitter

In this week’s Digital Week in Review: The new Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus are available for pre-order, Facebook hits 1 billion videos views a day, and an Infographic on “The Story of Twitter”.

Apple iPhone 6 and 6 Plus Now On Sale for Pre-Order

The new Apple iPhone is now available for pre-order in countries such as the United States, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK. They are set to start shipping the new phones on September 19th.

This is the first time Apple has offered two different sizes at once on a new model, so it will be interesting to see which model customers take more of a liking too. In this case, is bigger always better? Apple’s 6 Plus can now directly complete with the Samsung Galaxy in the phablet category. Apple is touting the 6 as “the best phones we’ve ever made”.

The three main differences between the two phones are:

Screen Size: The iPhone 6 is 4.7 inches and the iPhone6 Plus is 5.5 inches.

Battery Life: The iPhone 6 has 14 hours of talk time and the 6 Plus has 24 hours.

Price: The iPhone 6 starts at $199 for a 16 GB, $299 for 64 GB and $499 for 128 GB, on a two year contract. The 6 Plus on a two year contract starts at $299 for a 16GB, $399 for 64 GB, and $400 for 128 GB.

Facebook Reaches 1 Billion Video Views Per Day

Facebook is now reaching a billion views per day on videos posted publically by users, public figures, and pages. Unsurprisingly, 65% of these views are coming from mobile users, which is where Facebook’s user base is currently shifting towards. Their mobile user base grew 50% between May and July, thanks to the ALS Ice Bucket challenge videos that were posted online and went viral.

This poses huge opportunity for advertising on Facebook, as they hope to convince advertisers to shift from TV ad spending into a more digital space. Publishes and pages will also now have greater access to analytics on view counts, unique viewers, and how long people watched the video before leaving.

Additionally, Facebook announced this week that they are adding a new call-to-action feature for its videos; once you are done watching, it will recommend other videos for you to watch, much like YouTube does on its videos.

The Evolution of Twitter Infographic

Twitter first started on March 21st, 2006 with the first Tweet ever sent by co-founder Jack Dorsey; “ just setting up my twttr”.

By July 2006, the service was public. By early 2010 Twitter was seeing 50 million Tweets a day, and by the end of 2012 there was 200 million people were using the platform. Ellen Degeneres’ celebrity Oscar selfie became the most re-Tweeted pic ever.
